Expanding the human potential, and life extension more specifically, had never really been popular topics in England. But in California, Max More found that he wasn’t alone in his interest.

One of More’s colleagues at USC, a Belgian-born, Iranian-American author and teacher born as Fereidoun M. Esfandiary but who went by the name “FM-2030,” had throughout the ’70s and ’80s been popularizing a radically futurist vision for mankind.

Inspired by the worldwide protest movements of the 1960s, where he saw everyday people from around the world speak out against government corruption and social injustice, FM-2030 began envisioning a future where humanity would transcend borders to establish a universal dialogue free from nationality, politics, and heritage. To realize this, he started advocating high-tech homes and lifestyles, for people to live in an interconnected global society.

Furthermore, development of new technologies would give engineers the tools to dramatically change the world for the better, FM-2030 predicted. He believed that any risks associated with technological innovation would be offset by the rewards of progress: solar and atomic power would bring energy abundance, humans would colonize Mars, robot workers would increase leisure time, and people could earn a living from the comfort of their own homes thanks to the advent of teleworking.

Even more interestingly, FM-2030 predicted that technology would soon reach the point where it could drastically improve humans themselves. Health standards would advance considerably as more diseases could be cured while genetic flaws could be corrected; future pharmaceuticals could boost the human potential by, for example, enhancing brain activity.

Ultimately, he expected that medical science would even “cure” aging, and therefore, do away with finite human lifespans. By FM-2030’s estimation, humanity would conquer death around his hundredth birthday in the year 2030; it’s what the number in his name referred to. (“FM,” meanwhile, variously stood for Future Man, Future Marvel, or Future Modular—and sometimes something else, depending on his mood or who asked.)

As traditional limitations on the human potential, like finite lifespans, would be removed while bionic body parts and other artificial enhancements increasingly unlocked new possibilities, FM-2030 predicted that humans would eventually transform most radically, and turn themselves into synthetic post-biological organisms:

“It’s just a matter of time before we reconstitute our bodies into something entirely different, something more space-adaptable, something that will be viable across the solar system and beyond.”
