Friedrich Hayek wanted to denationalize money and David Chaum wanted to make it private. While the economist and the cryptographer each had a revolutionary idea, they never quite shared the same goal.

They did, however, inspire the same man.

Max O’Connor grew up in the small British city town of Bristol in the 1960s and ’70s. His imagination was sparked early on by real events—like the moon-landing that he witnessed on television at age five—as well as fictional stories from the comic books he devoured. He dreamed of a future where humanity expanded its potential in sci-fi-esque ways, a world where people would possess X-ray vision, carry disintegrator guns, or could walk straight through walls.

By his teenage years, O’Connor had acquired an interest in the occult. He thought that the key to realizing superhuman potential could perhaps be found in the same domain as astral projection, dowsing rods, and reincarnation. To explore these possibilities, he founded the Psychic Development and Research club at his school, where he and his fellow junior occultists studied the supernatural.

But O’Connor, who around this time became interested in life extension in particular, wasn’t exactly finding what he was looking for. What was consistently missing, he began to realize, was compelling evidence that any of the mystical practices actually worked.

The teenager eventually changed his mind on the occult entirely, and concluded that there was no value to be gained from these beliefs and practices. Instead of the supernatural, he figured that human progress was best served by science and logic.

And even without supernatural powers, O’Connor could at least maximize his own potential through hard work. In school, he was a keen student, and ambitious, too—at least as long as the topics in class were compelling. He was especially interested in subjects concerning social organization, and he eventually graduated top of his economics class in school.

The hard work paid off when O’Connor in 1984 was accepted to the University of Oxford, and his drive to achieve and make the most out of himself only seemed to grow at this prestigious university. He worked diligently for three years straight, following courses in politics, economics, and philosophy. By age twenty-three, he’d earned degrees in all three.

At that point, it was time for a change of scenery. As a young adult, the fresh Oxford graduate aspired to be a writer, but the old university town with its wet climate, dark winters, and traditional British values wasn’t providing him with the energy or inspiration that he was looking for. It was time to go somewhere else, somewhere new . . . somewhere exciting.

O’Connor found that new destination when he in 1987 was awarded a fellowship to enter a PhD program in philosophy at the University of Southern California. He was moving to Los Angeles.

Upon arrival in the Golden State, O’Connor immediately felt at home. The sunny LA weather was an obvious upgrade from Oxford’s dreariness, and in stark contrast to the conservative mindset that was prevalent in Great Britain, the cultural vibe on America’s West Coast encouraged ambition and to aspire for success: Californians celebrated achievement, they respected risk-taking, and they praised movers and shakers.

Here, O’Connor would start a new life, as a new man.

To commemorate the fresh start, he even decided to change his name; from then on, Max O’Connor would go through life as “Max More.”

“It seemed to really encapsulate the essence of what my goal is: always to improve, never to be static,” he later explained. “I was going to get better at everything, become smarter, fitter, and healthier. It would be a constant reminder to keep moving forward.”
