The Genesis Book is a research project by Aaron van Wirdum, which will eventually be published as a book by the same name. It traces back the origins of Bitcoin by telling the story of the people and projects that ultimately led to the launch of the world’s first and most successful peer-to-peer electronic cash system.
After several years of research and writing, a draft version of The Genesis Book was published online in May 2023 under the creative commons license. Anyone is now invited to read the text and offer feedback, provide additional information, suggest corrections or contribute in other ways. In Bitcoin parlance, the book has been “open sourced”.
The easiest way to contribute is by commenting or making suggestions directly in these Google Docs. Alternatively, input can be sent to bitcointhegenesisbook@gmail.com. Anyone who contributed to The Genesis Book in any way is welcome to add their name (or alias) to the .
FAQ: (Feel free to suggest any questions you may have.) Have you considered hosting the project on GitHub or elsewhere?
Yes, GitHub was my first idea, but I think Google Docs is easier to use for most people (including myself), so I figured that actually makes more sense for this purpose. I don’t like that Google Docs depends on non-free software, nor that it leaks info about the people reading the documents. But I am a pretty big fan of the functionality of Google Docs, so that's the tradeoff I'm making for now.
I also thought about publishing the project in different places at the same time (so both Google Docs and GitHub), but I worry that I'll lose track of changes if I do that, the texts get out of sync, and the editing process becomes a mess. So I've decided it's just Google Docs for now.
That said, I've published the text under a creative commons license which allows anyone to republish it in other places, if they like. If you email me, I can also send you the project as a .zip file with .docx documents for each chapter.
