The Meeting

Hughes wouldn’t move to Santa Cruz in the end. Yet, the trip wasn’t wasted. During his visit to the beach town, Hughes and May had come to agree that it was time to start closing this gap between academia and the real world, and they concluded that they were going to have to take the initiative to make this happen themselves. May and Hughes committed to gathering an assembly of some of the brightest and most competent cryptographers and hackers from the Bay area, and got to work.

The first person they involved with their plan was John Gilmore, an early Sun Microsystems employee and cofounder of the digital rights group Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) who had already been speaking about bringing cryptography to the masses for some time within local hacker circles. The three of them—May, Hughes, and Gilmore—then started inviting more like-minded individuals who they believed wouldn’t shun some hands-on tech activism.

A couple of months would go by, until on a Saturday in September about two dozen such like-minded individuals showed up at Hughes’s new—and at the time still unfurnished—apartment in Oakland. Most of the attendees were sourced from the Bay area hacker community, while May also brought in a small Extropian delegation. It made for an especially tech-savvy group of people.

May opened the assembly with a primer on cryptography. He pitched the attendees on the promising potential of public key crypto as well as some of the innovative schemes that had been proposed since Diffie and Hellman’s breakthrough, before handing out a booklet (composed by himself) explaining the basics and defining important terms. The group proceeded to discuss the potential implications for society if crypto tools became widely available and, conversely, the unsettling implications of a future without such tools.

In the afternoon, the whole gang, seated on the floor for lack of furniture, proceeded to playfully experiment with analog representations of crypto protocols. They created the paper-based “crypto-anarchy game,” where envelopes represented an anonymizing message relay protocol, a bulletin-board served as an information market, and monopoly money was passed around like digital cash. In a fun way, everyone got a feel of how these systems would work.

The meeting was a success. By the end of a day filled with mini-seminars, brainstorm sessions, and games, everyone who made it to Hughes apartment for this special occasion was infected with the same sense of enthusiasm that had moved May, Hughes, and Gilmore to gather the unique group of people in one place. More importantly, they now shared the organizers’ assessment that the crypto protocols they’d been learning about had to be implemented as working software, and be made available as far and wide as possible. To further the cause, they agreed to make the gathering a monthly event.

At this point, the group also concluded they needed a catchy name to describe themselves with. Hughes had until then been calling it the Cryptology Amateurs for Social Irresponsibility (or CASI for short), but they were now debating suggestions like “The Crypto Freedom League,” “Privacy Hackers,” and “The Crypto Cabal.” It was amid all this banter that Hughes’s girlfriend at the time, hacker Jude Milhon, jokingly exclaimed: “You guys are just a bunch of cypherpunks!”

With the clever portmanteau of “cipher” and “cyberpunk,” the group had found their name.
